ROTARIANS TRAVEL ON TRAINS AND RAFTS
On Wednesday 10th of August the members of The Rotary Club of Donaghadee took the children, siblings, parents and conductors from The Lighthouse Summer School on a trip to Drumawhey Junction Miniature Railway. Since 1997 the Lighthouse Trust has organised an eight week Summer School providing conductive education for children with cerebral palsy. The school is held in the Parish Centre, Donaghadee, Co. Down. This is a cross community organisation with children coming from all over Ireland and the UK. Most of the children have mobility problems. The aim of the school is to encourage the children to take their experience at the summer school into their everyday activities, in order to increase the children’s independence and self esteem throughout the year. After the train rides which were thoroughly enjoyed by both adults and children alike the entire party including representatives from the Miniature Railway Society dined at Pier 39 Donaghadee. The members of the Rotary club would like to thank the members of The Belfast and County Down Miniature Railway Society and the Owners and Staff of Pier 36 for their assistance with this outing. On Saturday Capt Bill commanded the crew of The Ancient Mariner (the emphasis being on ancient) in the Donaghadee Lifeboat Raft Race. The Rotarians were there to up-hold their reputation as “the oldest rowers in town”. Their experience at taking part in water sports was evident when it was pointed out that one of the crew had his wet suit was on back to front. They managed to finish a creditable fourth. |
