ROTARIANS PRESENT CHEQUES
On 25.7.08 the President of Donaghadee Rotary Club Paul Leathem presented cheques for £250 each to McMillan Cancer Support and the N.I. Hospice. Elma Kirkpatrick received the cheque on behalf of McMillan Cancer Support and thanked the club members for their donation. She informed the members that she represented the North Down and Ards Cancer Support Group. Elma pointed out that between 20 and 30 people are diagnosed with cancer every day. She explained that McMillan Cancer Support helps to care for these people mentally, emotionally, physically, practically and financially. Every penny raised in N.I. stays in N.I. Elma disclosed that their biggest fundraiser is the Steam Traction Engine Rally which will take place on Friday night 8th August at Mountstewart. Karen Hewitt accepted the cheque on behalf N.I.Hospice. Whilst thanking the members for their donation, she explained that the Hospice was helping cancer patients find comfort during their last days. Karen explained that their main aim was to emphasise the quality of life and offer support to the patient’s family. They offer care 24hrs a day. They provide medical, social and spiritual care. Last year the Hospice on Summerton Rd Belfast admitted 345 patients. They provide day care which gives family members a break. Last year the Children’s Hospice Newtownabbey cared for 250 children. It takes £7 million a year to finance N.I.Hospice of which only £1million comes from the government. On Friday 25.7.08 members of the Rotary Club took part in Hugh Bell’s Wee Walk in aid of Action Cancer. |
