Presentation of Alf Buchanan Memorial Trophy
On 21 January 2006 Donaghadee Rotarians welcomed Rose Whelan, Vice Principal of Regent House School and Head Girl Zahra Hughes to their weekly meeting. President
Peter Irwin then presented a cheque for £100 to Rose Whelan. In thanking the
club she stated that Regent House always enjoyed being part of the competition. On
presenting Zahra Hughes with the Alf Buchanan Memorial Trophy, President Peter
said that she had given a sterling interview session at In her address after
the presentation Zahra showed why she had won the Donaghadee round of the
competition. She started by saying that
on hearing about the competition she did some research into Rotary and
discovered that it was a collection of businessmen who did fund raising for
charity. When she discovered that it entailed giving without receiving she
thought there must be a catch, but she could not find one. Zahra said the
competition had made her examine not only the leadership qualities she had but
also the ones she could develop. She explained that the experience gained from
the Donaghadee interview had helped her
with her University interview. She went on to say
that she had derived a lot of benefits from the competition and that it has a
lot to offer young people. Had it not been for the competition she would have
been unaware of Rotary and the impact it has on society and the opportunity to
look at her own leadership qualities.
