       PRESENTATION OF ALF BUCHANAN CUP

On Thursday 12.1.07. The members of Donaghadee Rotary Club welcomed their President Mark Brooks back from his holidays. Was it purely by chance that his holiday coincided with one of the clubs busiest periods?

Among the guests Mark welcomed Rotarian Bob Fraser from Mount Martha Rotary Club in Australia. Bob is on a two-month exchange to Donaghadee Methodist Church.

President Mark then presented the Alf Buchanan Memorial Cup to Connor Lamb from Regent House School. Connor was Donaghadee Rotary Clubs entrant in the Rotary Youth Leadership Competition. Connor was successful in the Province wide competition and won a trip to the European Parliament in Strasburg. The club also presented Connor with a cheque for his school.

Mark stated that when Connor mentioned that he was interested in politics he knew that the club had a winner.

Mark then introduced Dawn Murphy the President of Bangor Drama Club. Dawn then gave a brief outline of the history of the club which was founded in 1935 and met in the old Downshire Hotel now Woodsides. In 1938 it presented its first full-length play and in 1945 rented the old Home Guard centre of Castle Ave. The club now has a 76-seat theatre at 38a Central Ave Bangor.

Among the well-known authors and thespians involved with the club have been Colin Blakely, Doreen Hepburn and James Ellis. The club presents 3 main productions each year.

The drama club will be presenting “The Patrick Pearse Motel” a farce on 9th and 10th Feb in conjunction with Donaghadee Rotary Club. Tickets, which include a light supper and a glass of wine, are available from Rotary Club members at £10 each.

President Mark then thanked Dawn for giving up her valuable time to address the Rotarians.
