NEW GENERATIONS AND STREET COLLECTION
The New Generations Service Chair Jenny McCrea from the Rotary Club of Enniskillen addressed the weekly meeting of the Rotary club of Donaghadee on 1.9.11. The meeting was held at the usual venue of The Stables Groomsport. Jenny explained that as the name suggests New Generations is all to do with young folk. She added that Rotary needs to get young folk into its clubs. Jenny then spoke at length about Rotary’s Youth Leadership Competition. She explained that she had this year accompanied the winners on a wonderful trip to the European Parliament in Strasbourg. Jenny went on to explain about the winners visits to Stormont and The Dail to meet elected representatives before the journey to Strasbourg. Jenny then mentioned other Rotary competitions for young people which include: - The Young Writer, The Young Photographer, The Young Musician and The Young Chef. Jenny continued by explaining that Youth Exchange was becoming more popular with young people with three different types of exchange. 1. Short term for 3 weeks 2. Long term for 1 year 3. New Generations for 18 to 25 year olds which is a vocational exchange. Past President Bill Best thanked Jenny for her talk and hoped that it would generate an interest within the club to find candidates for The New Generations programmes. On Saturday members of the not so new generations of The Rotary Club of Donaghadee took to the streets for their annual street collection in aid of Rotary Foundation. The Rotary Foundation is Rotary’s own charity. Its mission is to enable Rotarians to advance world understanding, goodwill, and peace through the improvement of health, the support of education, and the alleviation of poverty. It has become one of the foremost non-governmental foundations with the educational support programme being the largest private scholarship endowment in the world. It is said that every minute of every day Rotary will touch the lives of millions somewhere in the world. A total of £668 was collected. The Rotarians would like to thank all who generously donated to their charity. |
