ROTARIANS PRESENT CHEQUE
When
the members of Donaghadee Rotary Club arrived for their weekly meeting at the
Stables on 19.1.06 they were treated to a lesson on how to collect money for
charity by “ Brass-neck Jackes McKeag ” He persuaded every one of them to
part with their hard earned cash for a fireside treasure hunt the money going to
2nd Donaghadee Scout Group.
When
the meeting itself commenced President Peter Irwin introduced
Emma
Rea from McMillan Cancer Relief as the guest speaker.
Emma
began by outlining her background in catering, sales and fitness and explained
how she started working for McMillan Cancer Relief in October 2005. Her job is
to organise the Major Capital Appeal that hopes to raise £1million.
Emma
pointed out that the charity which
receives no government funding helps over 4000 people every year some 50-70 of
them being children. In Northern Ireland some 39000 people suffer from Cancer
with 20 to 30 people every day being told that they have the disease.
She
continued by informing the meeting of McMillan’s mission statement “ Imagine
a time when every person in the land has equal and ready access to the best
treatment in the land”.
Emma
then went on to explain that the
charity provides treatment and support for cancer sufferers that crosses over
with that provided by the Marie Curie and other charities. The McMillan charity
funds the training of McMillan Doctors and Nurses this takes 4 years then they
are paid by the N.H.S. The charity also provides grants to make life easier for
sufferers of the disease. The charity has funded a cancer centre at Craigavon
Hospital and hopes to provide a £1 million support centre at the Belfast City
Hospital.
President
Peter Irwin then presented
Emma
with a cheque for £1100 for McMillan Cancer Relief. In thanking the members
for their hard work in collecting the money
Emma
ended with a quote from a patient “McMillan has helped me to live life to the
full some days I even forget I have cancer”.
