DONAGHADEE ROTARIANS HOST DISTRICT QUIZ
Last year under the captaincy of the then President Paul Leathem the Rotary Club of Donaghadee entered a team in the Rotary District Quiz. The team were under strict instructions from the club members not to win. It is the lot of the winners to host the quiz the following year. Unfortunately the competitive spirit got the better of the team and much to the annoyance of this years President Mike Camlin they won. It was decided for logistical reasons to hold this year’s quiz in St Brigids Hall Derryvolgie Ave Belfast, the same excellent venue as last year. Some 15 teams from as far apart as Londonderry and Armagh took part in the event held on the 20th May. The Donaghadee team were again under strict instructions not to win. After the third round they were in third position. This caused great consternation to President Elect Richard Caldwell as he saw a repeat of the previous year looming up, with all the work required by the club members to organise the event. He need not have worried, for answers like Captain Bligh instead of President J.F.Kennedy and the 100 years war instead of the American War of Independence (answers which the team genuinely thought were correct) soon had them dropping down the league table. The killer blow was the team’s lack of knowledge of the location of the States in the U.S.A. The team ended up 3rd from the bottom. The quiz was won by The Rotary Club of Carrickfergus who now have the dubious honour of hosting the event next year. The members of The Rotary Club of Donaghadee would like to thank all who attend the Quiz and made it such an enjoyable evening. They would particularly like to thank the Quiz Master Rotarian Billy Hamilton for his excellent choice of questions (it was the answers that caused the problems) and the Rotarians wives who provided the sandwiches and refreshments during the interval. The ballot of a limited edition print of Donaghadee Harbour kindly donated by Rotarian Les Jones raised over £300 for Killard Special School which has recently moved to Donaghadee. |
