Club Trip on RNLB Saxon
The above photograph is interesting for a variety of reasons. What it shows is Donaghadee Lifeboat RNLB Saxon exiting the harbour at full power on the evening of Thursday 11 August, the night of our second attempted club trip on the boat organised by President Peter Irwin. What it also shows, and this will be immediately obvious to you, is that there are no Rotarians on board! I will now attempt to explain. Our initial outing on the Lifeboat was arranged for Thursday 28 July. We all turned up on the pier as arranged - however, some degree of communication problems resulted in the trip being aborted. Now, it is probably totally unfair to blame the club President for this, but in true Rotary spirit, we did that anyway! In an attempt to redeem himself, he rescheduled the trip for tonight - 11 August and it almost worked! Indeed 50% of the club did get out on the first trip at 6.30pm (I didn't - hence this posting) however when the remaining members arrived at the pier on the instructions of the President at 7.15, we were greeted with the sight of RNLB Saxon doing a fast reverse and powering out of the harbour without us due to an emergency call from the Belfast Coastguard! Again, the blame for this obviously lies with the President and we await with interest his further attempt to put this issue to bed. On a serious note, fortunately the call out proved to be a false alarm and no lives were at risk (other than that of President Peter) All enjoyed a good meal and fellowship in Pier 36 and retired at a reasonable hour. |
