As a continuing part of its international charity work the Rotary Club of Donaghadee is sponsoring a child in Mongolia.  In 2006 Judy Monson, the daughter of Past President David, took part in a car rally from London to Mongolia.  In a presentation to the Club she highlighted the plight of Mongolian orphans.  As a result the Club contacted the Christina Noble Foundation and committed itself to the long-term sponsorship of a Mongolian child.

Its nominated child is 13-year-old Tuya who lives in the countryside with her mother and two younger brothers. They live in a Ger (traditional felt tent). Her father was killed in 2006 when he was swept away and drowned in a river. Her mother, age 34, is unemployed and has an education of just first four grades of a secondary school and she has no skills and a profession to have a proper employment.  To support her family she used to be a herder and to grow vegetables. At the moment she does cleaning, washing and nursing in households. The family income equates to less than US$30 per month.

Despite poverty, Tuya studies well at school. Her favourite subjects are Mongolian, English and Mathematics. She dreams of becoming a teacher of Mongolian when she grows up.  She reads books and helps her mother in the household when she has spare time.

With the Club’s financial help and support she will be able to continue with schooling and gain an education she deserves and make her dream come true. The sponsorship will make an enormous difference to her life and that of her family and help ease the very difficult burden under which they are living.
