Rotary Club of Donaghadee

  District 1160 Ireland

Action Cancer's Big Bus mobile unit visited Donaghadee on 20 July 2007 as part of its ongoing programme of visits around Northern Ireland. The unit, which is the first of its kind in Europe, was located at the paddling pool on the seafront and the cost of bringing the bus to the town for the day was sponsored by Rotary Club of Donaghadee. The 18-metre long vehicle houses cancer prevention, early detection and support services for men and women. The unit, whose main sponsor is retail group SuperValu and its independent retailers, was launched in 2006. Services provided on the Big Bus include digital breast screening for women aged between 40 - 49 and over 65, health promotion and men’s health checks.  A support scheme called the Listening Ear Service and complementary therapies are offered to cancer patients, their carers and families on board the unit.
