Annual Fellowship Weekend at The Brown Trout 5-7 March 2004

Fifteen Rotarians and their wives have just returned from a quiet relaxing ( ? ) weekend at The Brown Trout in Aghadowey. Couples gradually arrived from around mid afternoon on Friday and for a change, everyone seemed to find the venue ok - well at least no one admitted to getting lost!  Bar meals in abundance were consumed in front of toasting open fires with a few light refreshments to wash them down. A certain Rotarian's wife spent most of the evening trying to find out who wore what in bed - we never really got to the bottom of what that was about although she claimed it made interesting reading! Treasurer James did a superb job in charge of "the kitty", ensuring that no glasses remained empty for long - was he on a bonus for increased bar sales??

Saturday dawned bright and sunny, the same could not be said for all of our party!  Having said that, traditional healthy Donaghadee Rotary breakfasts were consumed (Ulster Frys all round) and plans were laid for the day. These ranged from ferry trips to Co Donegal, visits to an off licence in Coleraine that specialises in Malt Whiskey and expensive wines, taking in the sea air at Portstewart, attending a rugby match in Ballymena and for several wives, major doses of retail therapy. One Rotarian complained that at the end of the weekend, he had to make six trips to the car with the bags!

For many, the highlight of the day was to watch the Ireland v England rugby international - and what a match it was. The result is now legendary, there was little sympathy evident for Sir Clive!  Our President Les (Yorkshireman) was brave enough to watch the match wearing an England shirt. For  much of the game, his face was as white as the shirt! The said shirt was procured and turned into a table decoration at dinner on the Saturday night which followed a drinks reception laid on by President Les and his wife Ann in  their chalet.

Aided again by Treasurer James' fine "kitty keeping" and bar service, Saturday night was enjoyed by all, added to by local entertainment in the bar where there was much dancing and general merrymaking. Harris Cordner learned some new jokes, best not repeated here but I'm sure he will be willing to share them with anyone interested! Common sense and dignity demands that the photographs are not  published in this site but are available privately for a large donation to Rotary Funds!

The healthy breakfasts were repeated (somewhat later) on Sunday and many made their way home via the coast road as it was a magnificent day.
